TORO 2013

Author: Regis Bellemare

The TORO (Tounoi Ouvert Regional de l’Outaouais), the Outaouais Regional Open Tournament, was organized in Gatineau from June 7 to June 9. With 97 players in 3 sections, this tournament was a great success. The tournament rule of «no agreed draw before move 30» favored combative chess at every round.

There were 29 players in section A. With 9 masters, including GM Bator Sambuev (2589) and IM Jean Hébert (2409), we had to expect a good fight for the first place. Finally, Sambuev and Hébert drew their last game, giving a final score of 4.5 points to Sambuev, who took the first place ahead of Hébert with 4 points. Hébert's other draw was with NM Martial Larochelle in round 2. Larochelle shared the third place (3.5/5) with FM Robert Hamilton, NM Maroun Tomb and NM Kris Laptos.

Section B (-1900) had 28 players. Luc Villeneuve and Ananda Saha tied for the first place with 4.5 points. In Section C (-1500), Ben Kellar (1167) made his way to the top with 5 wins.

You will find the prize distribution bellow and the complete results are posted at http://pages.globetrotter.net/jrboutin/Standings.html.

Bringing back the TORO after a long pause, Marcel Laurin, organizer and president of the Outaouais Chess League did an outstanding work. He was seconded by National Arbiter Jean-Roger Boutin of Quebec, tournament director of the FIDE rated section A and Regis Bellemare, arbiter of sections B and C. The excellent work of the organizing team, the great tournament hall in Gatineau Town Hall and the $5000 guaranteed prize fund should make this tournament become a major chess event over the next years.
